The Sam L. Cohen Children’s Library is excited to host the Maine Academy of Modern Music’s  The Kids Are Alright, a family friendly local music series aimed at encouraging children’s involvement in the musical arts. This series will take place on the first Saturday of the month (October through April) at 10:30 in the Portland Public Library’s Rines Auditorium. In addition to live performances by some of the area’s top talent, each event will feature a “Get-To-Know-Your-Local-Musician” component that will allow parents and children a chance to ask the performer(s) questions about what it is like to be a musician in Maine.  Likewise, MAMM will host an “Instrument Petting Zoo” so that everyone will have a chance to try out some of the instruments that they will have seen used on stage during the performance that day. The Library will provide concert attendees with resources about the importance of music in the  early literacy and brain development of young children.

THIS MONTH: May 2 - Aaron Henry

Aaron Henry is a professional saxophonist and woodwinds player specializing in jazz, funk, rock and improvisation.  He has been a performer for nearly 20 years, playing in numerous festivals and venues around the world.
Originally from California, Aaron graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston and spent the last decade+ in New York City before moving to Maine in 2018.  "I've always loved creating music on the spot - improvisation brings out the most creative aspects of my playing, and I love sharing that art with audiences."
Using an effects pedal to help spontaneously create loops and harmonies, Aaron will demonstrate a range of several woodwind instruments, including saxophones, clarinets, and flutes of different sizes, all the while improvising with a variety of rhythms so that kids and audiences understand how rhythms act like the building blocks of music, combining with different instruments to create new sounds and harmonies on the spot.
