Kitchen Science: Griddle Cakes 12/12/2018 11:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Use the scientific method to find the perfect recipe for griddle cakes by testing varying amounts of sodium bicarbonate (commonly known as baking soda!).
 
The Magnificent Enlarging Marshmallow 12/12/2018 2:30 p.m. - 3 p.m.
 Examine changes in air pressure and its effect on molecules by creating massive marshmallows, bursting balloons, and exploding shaving cream.

Saint Lucia Story & Crown Making 12/13/2018 12 p.m. - 12:30 p.m.
In Sweden young children balance wreaths of candles and tall star hats on their heads to celebrate Saint Lucia's Day. Hear the story of Santa Lucia and create your own crown to celebrate this special day.
 

Extra Yarn Art 12/13/20182:30 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Inspired by a tale about a magical box of yarn, create colorful sweaters for things that don't even wear sweaters and spread a little joy.
 
Little Feminists Story Time 12/14/2018 10:30 a.m. - 11 a.m.
Spark you imaginations and be inspired! In this story time for all, listen and compare a fairy tale with a nonfiction story about women who have changed the world. 
 
Snowsong Whistling Painting Time 12/14/2018 12 p.m. - 12:30 p.m.
As autumn turns into winter, you can almost hear the sounds of hot pies baking, red squirrels packing, sleigh bells jingling, and other reminders that the season is about to change. Share the magic of the first snowfall during this story and art time. 
 
Electric Circuit Lab 12/14/2018 2:30 p.m. - 3 p.m.
As the days grow shorter, complete an electric circuit to brighten up the day. Experiment with light bulbs, fans, motors, and more!
 

Winter Wonderland Cabin Making Workshop 12/14/2018 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Design and decorate your own wooden cabin during this messy, festive workshop. Add snowy roofing, decorate each cozy room, and make figures and creatures to live in your creation. Cabin measures approximately 14 x 16 x 5 inches. $30 per wooden house (members receive a 10% discount). Make cherished family memories this holiday season with a cozy weekend at the Museum & Theatre. Celebrate the winter weather with Jan Brett's The Mitten, a classic story of a surprising shelter that kept stretching to fit each new occupant. Show off your forest animal dance moves, have your face painted, watch Museum & Theatre actors act out the story, and explore forest animal artifacts during this weekend-long celebration.

The Mitten: An Interactive Play for All Ages 12/15/2018 11:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Experience the magic of live theatre as actors from the Museum & Theatre's Main Stage productions bring Jan Brett's The Mitten to life on stage. The cast will tell this classic story of sharing a home and finding a place for each new person who comes along. Get ready to be part of the adventure; help Nicki find his lost mitten or teach Bear the appropriate sneezing technique.
Why Sea Stars Don't Need Mittens 12/15/2018 1 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Take a dive in our Tide Pool Touch Tank and find out why some creatures need their habitat to be nice and cold. Meet and touch live sea stars, blue mussels, and more and find out just how cold Casco Bay needs to stay to protect these treasured ocean friends. 
 

Jan Brett Celebration 12/15/2018 2 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.
'Tis the season to snuggle up with a good book and our featured author, Jan Brett, has so many to choose from! We'll read as many of her festive tales as we can during this celebration. Stay for one story or the whole fun-filled adventure.
Ideal for ages 0-100.

Science of the Sneeze: A Handwashing Game 12/15/2018 4 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
 **Spoiler alert!** Once the forest animals in Jan Brett's The Mitten squeeze themselves into a lost mitten, the mouse causes the bear to sneeze and the mitten's occupants go flying through the air. Find out why we sneeze during this interactive science experiment. Then, practice good hand washing techniques to keep you healthy all winter long.
Ideal for ages 4-10 and caregivers.

Hand-Make a Holiday Gift 12/16/2018 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Design, craft, and paint your very own gifts for the loved ones in your life. Choose from zippy wooden cars and trains, glittering mussel shells and Maine-themed ornaments, twinkling firefly tea lights, ferocious wooden dinosaurs, and much more. Each gift is $3 or $5, depending on size and includes ribbons, custom wrapping paper, and a tag. (Members receive a 10% discount.) 100 Color Challenge 12/16/2018 11 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Every color is created from a combination of just three primary colors. Be the paint master and accept the challenge to paint 100 different colors using only red, blue, and yellow.

Rise and Shine! The Museum & Theatre will open at 9am (one hour earlier) on Tuesday mornings. Does your little one get up extra early or take a morning nap? Come for an early morning of play!

We Shine Our Light Sing-Along12/18/2018 11 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
 It's that magical time of year when many New Mainer and Rooted Mainer families share special traditions to honor the darkest time of the year. Learn a song all about sharing the light within us all and sing about traditions new and old. Then, share your own winter traditions and help add them to our song.

Collaborative Heart Art 12/20/2018 12 p.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Experience the process of working with many artists as we create a Chris Uphues-inspired mural. Trace hearts onto a giant piece of paper or try drawing them free-hand. Then, taking inspiration from Uphues' street art, we'll add facial features to each heart. 
 
Young Engineers 12/20/2018 3:30 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Think, build, test, and share! Take on a story-based challenge such as making a sturdy chair for Baby Bear, crafting a mechanism for Rapunzel, building a car with special features, or figuring out a way to squeeze your own lemonade.
Designed for ages 6-10 and their grownups.

Meet the Portland Firefighters 12/21/2018 10:30 a.m. - 11 a.m.
Meet Portland's firefighters and learn what their job entails (dependent upon firefighter availability). If the firefighters are out helping the community, we'll learn about fire safety and real firefighter emergency protocol in the Museum & Theatre's own fire truck.

Meet our live yellow-bellied slider turtles and learn about turtles around the world as we stretch like a turtle, feel a real turtle shell, and explore turtle habitats.
 
Mood Mud: Holiday Themed Color-Changing Playdough 12/23/2018 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
