Homemade activities we thought were a pain. Turns out they’re pretty simple.

I’ve always read about these at-home recipes for making soap or lollipops and thought, “How fun, but when do I ever have (insert obscure ingredient here) on hand?” Check out these super simple recipes and mixtures (using ingredients you definitely have around!) for creating fun activities guaranteed to keep the kids busy long enough for you to empty the dishwasher.

Homemade Bubbles
Mix ½ cup of dishwashing liquid (Joy and Dawn brands seem to work best) with 1 ½ cups of water. Add two tablespoons of light corn syrup or two teaspoons of sugar. Use leftover wands from store-bought bubbles or make your own from pipe cleaners, wire, hangers or even string.

Super-Simple Volcano
Surround a tall jar or drinking glass with newspapers to build up the volcano (you may want to tape it to the table or to a cardboard base). Cover with aluminum foil and make a hole where the jar is. Pour baking soda into the jar. Add some dishwashing liquid and food coloring. Pour in some vinegar, and stand back!

At-Home Playdough
Mix two cups of flour, one cup of hot water, and one cup of salt. Add drops of food coloring to make any shade you wish. Wrap the playdough in plastic wrap when you’re done and it will stay fresh for a long time.

Go get your fun on!
