Communication for Parenting with Sarah MacLaughlin, LSW

Why do kids act that way? When we understand how brains work we can do a better job guiding (but not controlling!) children’s behavior. Learn about the factors that affect behavior and how to improve communication. With a focus on connection and relationship you can help build emotionally intelligent homes and communities.

Sarah MacLaughlin, LSW is a parent educator and author of the award-winning book, What Not to Say: Tools for Talking with Young Children. She writes full time for ZERO TO THREE, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving the well-being of babies and young children. Sarah is also Mom to a tweenaged son who gives her plenty of opportunities to take her own advice.

Emotion Regulation and Essential Oils with
Susan Malcolm, LCSW
Have you ever taken a big sniff and been transported to a feeling or memory? Our sense of smell is directly connected to parts of our brain that deal with emotions. Because of this, aromatherapy is a great tool to help the WHOLE family navigate big feelings. During this segment, I will teach you how our family came to use essential oils to promote healthy coping and a positive frame of mind. We will learn a smidge of brain function, a dollop of oil science, and do a LOT of sampling. Workshop participants will leave with a small inhaler of their favorite scent.

Sue Malcolm is a clinical social worker with a private psychotherapy practice in Portland. She started as a distributor of essential oil products two years ago when powerful personal experiences led her to dive into the research of aromatherapy.
