Families find a lot to love – and to do – at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. The two-acre Bibby and Harold Alfond Children’s Garden, with themes from favorite books, offers endless no-tech activities and programs that are fun as well as educational. The shorefront Fairy House Village, recently re-imagined with stone “ruins,” is a great spot for young architects and builders. Water features and a labyrinth make the sensory garden a favorite, too. Miles of waterfront and woodland trails and a dock (open in 2014) provide opportunities for outdoor pursuits. The Gardens Gift Shop offers children’s items and books, and the Kitchen Garden Café has a children’s menu. Open 9-5 daily. Admission, April through October: $14 adults, $12 ages 65+, $6 ages 3-17; under 3 and all members free; family rate is $30 for two adults and two children. Grounds are open year-round, with free admission charge November through March.
